The Estuary Trail is the Crown Jewel of Kamp Klamath's walking and hiking trails. Nowhere in the majical world of the Redwood Coast is there access to such diversified beauty as through the Esturary Trail - and the only trail access to this little-known wonderland is from Kamp Klamath

The trail begins at Kamp Klamath's Log Cabin office, passes through the Kamp Meadow into a thick grove of Red Alder trees. Winding in a Disneyland-like fashion through thickets of blackberies, salmon berries and anise, the trail emerges into a dry overflow channel of the Klamath River. The trail follows this channel, flanked by Alders and Willow punctuated with wildflowers and pampas grass. On the right is a finger of the Klamath River estuary, pointing upstream within grass-lined banks.

An alert hiker will discover a small birdhouse mounted on an Alder accross the water. Placed as a public service by the hunters' organization Ducks Unlimited, it serves as an oft-populated nest for the colorful Wood Ducks.

As the trail continues west, a tight passage opens to a clearing filled with a colony of Foxglove wildflowers. This array of these beautiful flowers is unusual as it includes hybreds displaying many different colors and patterns.

A few yards further brings the hiker to trail's end and a stunning view of the innermost reaches of the Klamath River esturary. A grassy meadow gives way to everflowing tidal waters, growing and shrinking islands, waterfowl and shore birds. Distant sand bars bracket the river's escape to the Pacific Ocean and the muted roar of crashing waves olends background to the startling cries of circling Osptreys.
